How to tie your shoelaces
For many years I thought I knew how to tie my shoelaces.
I did not. They often came undone.
Now I know. If you do not know, I can teach you. There are three things to know.
One: there are enough types of knot
Whatever your exact requirements, there is a knot you can learn that does the job well. Very likely your first requirement is “does not come undone”. There are many knots that achieve that. You might choose between them based on how quickly you can tie them, or perhaps on appearance.
Two: length is not a problem
If your laces are “too long” or “too short”, they are not actually too long or too short. Just relace them in a different pattern that consumes more or less lace, as appropriate.
Three: help is at hand
The third thing you need to know is that there is an in-depth guide to shoelace knots and lacing called
Ian’s Shoelace Site. It is a wonderful page from before the Web got all platformy.
