Exercise

As a kid I was very much into computers, maths, books … and somehow got it into my head that this meant I got a “free pass” on my physical well-being. It was something for other people.

It turns out that’s not how it works.

Fortunately in my twenties I discovered that I like watching TV while running on a treadmill. It felt good, so I kept doing it, and ended up in reasonably good shape, and with the firm belief that I should aim for enough daily and weekly activity to stay healthy.

So, life advice?

It’s a tough area to give advice in, because it very quickly sounds preachy and annoying. So I’ll keep it to the absolute minimum.

The headline is: whatever works for you. Try things. If you have options, try to pick the one that gets you more exercise. Try to find something you can do regularly, try to hit a routine with built-in activity, try to make time for it. It’s never too late to start, and if you’re not getting enough exercise, any addition is good for you. With one caveat …

And the caveat is: avoid injuring yourself by doing too much too soon. I find I easily injure my feet or knees if I run outside; I get too into it, run too fast, and discover later it was too much. The measured approach of a treadmill works well for me.

Good luck!
