Surreal numbers

Surreal Numbers (How Two Ex-students Turned on to Pure Mathematics and Found Total Happiness: a Mathematical Novelette) by Donald Knuth is an exploration of pure maths from the point of view of a young couple.

It’s short, joyful, and not for everyone.

If as a child you experienced disappointment when adults explained gleefully that you “can’t” divide by zero, or multiply by infinity, but you haven’t given up hope and would like to learn how, without worrying about why … perhaps it is for you.
